Miss Ann's Horseshoe Diamond Pendant

eFor more than forty years, Miss Ann has been at the sketch pad and the accounting books to keep Jimannique indeed the producer of unique, wonderful gold and fine art (wearable art) pieces. One of the many pieces she has designed, she also wears on a daily basis. You see it here as a diamond studed horseshoe pendant.

This particular horseshoe is about 3/4 inch high and it is so designed that it will fit on the chain over the heirloom diamond that belonged to one of her very dear friends. The diamond is an individually strung drop which is threaded within the horseshoe between the heels. We have other drops (birthstone or semi-precious stones) available as well as the skills to mount yours as a heirloom stone or diamond drop similar to Miss Ann's.

This piece would make a fine keepsake gift to a loved one or friend. The horseshoe is always upright so good luck never flows away. In the Middle Ages, finding a horseshoe was a sign of good luck, and attaching it to a house or barn brought good luck to all endeavors within.

I don't believe in hexes or the mythology surrounding such symbols, but they do remind us of our connection to diety and to mother earth (other people). To be reminded of our touch with all that's good, whether a pendant or ring, the horseshoe symbol is a reminder again of our good luck.

This horsehoe pendant as well as other horseshoe pieces are available for sale. Call Miss Ann at 316-202-5422, for more details and prices. Look for other horse related gold pieces, carvings of horses, and other aminals,  ready for Christmas.

What Does Quality Look Like?

What does quality look like?

Fine quality jewelry begs an introduction. I'm over 65, but until I started traveling with Jimannique, I had little idea what constitutes a quality piece of good gold jewelry. Some years ago my late wife sent me to get a gold chain. I had no idea that there was a difference between solid and plated. 24K, 18K, 14K and 10K had little meaning except when I looked at the price, and color. I was a babe in the woods. I suspect I have lots of company.

There are those whose family bought and wore fine gold jewelry. There are little things that make “so-so” pieces different than the quality that you have learned to expect from Jimannique. On the surface these things seem so tiny, and not worth mentioning, but it makes a difference when you expect to wear your jewelry for years, and even pass it down to your loved ones.

Fads may date the piece. There are fads that some feel make the pendant fashionable. Jimannique has followed a classic line without flair or flourish. Stylized or unnatural depictions may be popular now, but in the future may go out of vogue. Ann Collings, the artist, and owner of Jimannique, has always designed her pieces in a 'life-like” manner. When you see a horse, you can see the muscles and movement of the horse. You can tell which of the several breeds she has depicted. It is even possible to see some of the characteristics of your horse in her piece. She has not changed this pattern since she started casting 14K gold in the late 60's.

“Let me spoil you for a moment,” is a comment that I often make when I am showing pieces at our booth. I pick up a pendant that we call “The Two For One.” The one side is formal, with a Florentine finish, with several diamonds adorning the eye, tail, and several individually placed diamonds. Now watch when I turn the piece over to show the other side. It is polished or informal. While you are wearing your piece, if it flips over, it will be a horse going the other way. This is “A woman designing for women.” We men would would save a little gold making the back “hollow.” Now, if your pendant flips over, you see a crater. All Ann's pendants, and dangle earrings are finished this way (double finished), or are smooth on the back for a “comfort-wear” experience. There will be no sharp edges or rough spots to catch on your blouse or sweater.

In my little time left in this article, let me mention the weak spot in many commercial pendants. Many come with an “O” ring that allows the chain to attach to the piece. This allows the pendant to hang in a haphazard manner. Sometimes your horse will be traveling level, while other times it will be taking a nose dive, or rearing up. This is important particular in the breeds where the show horse raises their front foot and appears to be standing on three legs. The weak spot in the "O" ring as well as other thin spots can break or wear through, allowing your expensive pendant to be lost or at least on the floor. Ann solders the bale directly to the piece, to control the balance, and to give you a much stronger piece.

“Quality,” means you can wear one of Ann's pieces while you ride, work about the stable, not lose a diamond, or bend a shank.

“If you don't know jewelry, know your jeweler.”

Dusty Ribbons

Some years ago, a member of our family was involved in the horse show circuit. Over the years of showing, she had quite a box full of ribbons. It was fun to put them up in the stalls at the shows, and she had displayed some in her room. Thus, the life of the ribbons, and trophies.

The time did arrive when she left our home to go to college. She packed her box of ribbons, and in short order, was putting them up in her dorm room. She was nearly finished when her roommate come in and blurted out, “What is this? The box of ribbons came back to my place where they lived in the attic for the next several years.

At last sighting, I saw that box of dusty ribbons going down the road to her new house to live with her new family. It think they probably ended up on the curb waiting for the garbage truck.

How I wished I had bought a nice piece of ribbon jewelry for her when she was younger. She would have had that piece to wear even now. She is still interested in horses, and works with horses that have special problems and health problems. She would still be sharing the stories about her showing experiences rather than hiding the memories behind a dusty box of faded ribbons.

Why Do I Wear Jewelry?

Why do we wear jewelry? Some would say that it makes us feel better to have a nice piece of gold or silver pendant. It might identify us as a member of a class or group such as a Masonic ring, or a rodeo team.

The long and short of this article is simply, “We wear jewelry as a conversation piece”. We want people to notice what we are wearing and make a comment, (complimentary, so we hope.) We enjoy telling someone the story of what we do, or where we got the piece. We want people to hear what hobbies we have, or even as with the horses, what our horse is like, or what we have won in our showing.

As one of the folks at Jimannique, I want you to be glad to say that you got your piece at our booth. You know, Ann has designed every piece we sell. All the pieces are cast so that the back is finished and it is often double sided. We know how difficult it is to see the backs of pendants on our website, but if you have ever seen our booth, you will recognize the quality of the gold and how much fun it is to wear and talk about.
